milk supply loss at 7 months?
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 2:50 PM
Question: I have been breastfeeding exclusively up until this point. I noticed probably a few days ago that my baby has not been nursing long enough, yet, he doesn't fuss or seem overly hungy. Anyway, I just started my period today and I am wondering if this is normal or do you think my milk supply is depleting therefore inducing my period? How do I keep my milk supply up and get him to focus on eating? He really doesn't care for bottles too much and/or for formula.

middle of the night breastfeeding
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:44 AM
Question: Hi, My son is now 7.5 months and still wakes at 2am to breastfeed. I've read that he should be not needing this anymore. He is a big boy at 25lbs and it took awhile but he is now feeding every 3.5 to 4 hours during the day. He's on solids however he doesn't care for much other than cereal and a few veggies. I'm not sure if he's not getting enough food (I don't want to fill him up on cereal if he doesn't eat his fruit or veggie) as it took me an hour last night to try and get him back to sleep without feeding him. I've tried having his dad do it, giving him water in a sippy cup but he still wakes around 2 to 3 each night. He gets a dream feed at 10-11pm (I let him wake for it rather than me wake him up) and then if I don't feed him at the 2am wake up then he usually is up again at 4am. When he feeds it only lasts about 5 to 8 minutes but when I pump that's about how long that lasts as well...a fast let down, I assume. So, am I depriving him of milk or should he hopefully get over waking up to feed

breast fed baby bowel movements
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:42 AM
Question: My baby is 4 months old today. He is exclusively breastfeeding. He has not had a bowel movement in 13 days. He is not fussing, he does not have a fever, he is very alert and active. He eats every 2-3 hours for 7-16 minutes, his latch is fantastic!!! I change him before every feed and his diaper is always wet. This is the longest he has ever gone with out a bowel movement normally he has a bowel movement every 7 - 12 days. I am starting to really worry. Should I give him a laxative? His belly is not hard and he does not seem uncomfortable. I've given him prune juice and have massaged his belly, I've even tried a pro-biotic. He has never spit up but he does pass a lot of gas stinky gas very stinky. Should I continue to wait?

sudden milk production
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:41 AM
question:It's been 2years after my son's birth. Suddenly my breasts are producing milk. It's never happened before. My husband and I are planning a new baby. I ovulated less than 2weeks ago,my period should start next week. The pregnancy test was negative. I also had my loop removed the monday before my ovulation. Is pregnancy possible. Why am I lactating? Is there a reason other than possible pregnancy. I did breastfeed my son for less than 2months. I hope you can help. Regards.

Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:40 AM
Question: Hi, I have one month old baby who is exclusively breast feeding. From day one my one breast has been making more milk than the other one due to which my baby is feeding more on this breast than other.I have found same changes in more milk making breast from last TWO days first is the "size of this breast has become smaller than the other one" and the "color of areola that was turned to dark brown during pregency has switched to almost same light brown pre pregnency color" and also the "AREOLA that was spread in a larger area has been shrinked now".All these changes has happened in the breast that has been making more milk and so sucked more by baby. And the other one is making comparatively less milk has hardly undergone all these changes and is larger is size...i don't understand this differnce as i am a first time mom...please help!! thanks

breastfeeding a baby who is constantly hungry?
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:38 AM
Question: My baby is 5 months old and she is still hungry after she has finished breastfeeding (crying and crying when she can't get anymore out of my breast). I decided it was time to introduce cereal but after calling the doctor, they said not until she is 6 months old. I had tried giving her formula to supplement, but she wouldn't take it. She now takes a bottle of formula which I give her only after breastfeeding and only if she is giving me signs that she is still hungry. I know your body is supposed to cater to the babies needs (supply and demand) but she is still hungry! Is it okay to supplement with formula and am I depleting my milk supply by doing so?

weaning question
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:37 AM
question: Hello. I have been strictly pumping and feeding my baby the breastmilk by bottle, so I am not worried about his transition, but I am wondering how long my milk is good inside my body. I am eliminating pumpings slowly and I am wondering if the milk I am pumping is still safe for my baby even though I have not pumped for 8-10 hours. Does it sour while still in my breasts? Sorry, kindof a strange question, but I can tell the milk is not as opaque in color as it was when I pumped every 3-4 hours. Thanks for your help.

PTU and breastfeeding
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:36 AM
question: I am hyperthyroid and I have been taking PTU to treat my hyperthyroidism. I have been breastfeeding my three month old since her birth successfully. I enjoy breastfeeding her and would like to continue doing so for as long as I can. Recently, I had my thyroid retested and my endocrinologist indicated that I need to increase the dosage of the PTU. He said that he is not willing to provide me with a prescription until I stop breastfeeding because he is concerned about the medication leaking into my breastmild, thereby negatively impacting my baby's health. My baby refuses to take the bottle and I don't know what to do. I have been trying, unsuccessfully to give her a bottle since she was 6 weeks old. Any help would be very much appreciated.

possible second pregnancy question
Articles and Refrences By Ruth on 11/30/2008 7:33 AM
question :Ever since I had my first child, almost 16 months ago, I have had beast milk! I did breastfeed for the first 8 weeks of her life! My question to you is.... Since I have had breast milk all this time, and it was white, now that it is changing to a clear color, is that an indication that I am pregnant again? And, if so, about how far along would I be, since I just noticed that change today?
